About Don Stewart

Don Stewart is widely recognized for his leadership and expertise in developing effective advocacy and communications campaigns, advancing policy goals through earned media, and navigating a rapidly evolving media and political landscape. Stewart served as the Executive Vice President of Public Affairs for the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, leading the auto industry’s government relations and communications teams in a highly regulated political environment. He continues to serve as a senior political advisor to the association.
Founding partner of The Stewart Group, Stewart previously served as the Deputy Chief of Staff for U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and holds the distinction of being the longest-serving chief spokesman for a U.S. Senate Leader. He also served in senior roles for U.S. Sens. Paul Coverdell (R-GA), Phil Gramm (R-TX) and John Cornyn (R-TX).
In his leadership role with the Office of the Majority Leader, he was an advisor to the Leader and Senate leadership on policy communications, strategic planning, member relations, reputation management, and risk assessment and mitigation. He was the lead communicator and strategist on six Supreme Court nomination debates and co-produced eight Republican responses to State of the Union addresses.
Stewart, a veteran of the U.S. Army and a graduate of Armstrong Atlantic State University, is a native of southern California. He resides in south Florida.

Advocacy in the Automotive Sector
Stewart transitioned to the private sector as Executive Vice President of Public Affairs for Global Automakers and later the Alliance for Automotive Innovation. He led government relations and communications efforts, navigating complex regulatory challenges in a dynamic industry.
2006-2019
Leadership in Senate Communications
From 2006 to 2019, Stewart served as Deputy Chief of Staff and Communications Director for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY). In these roles, he oversaw policy communications, strategic planning, and reputation management, navigating some of the most high-profile political debates in recent history.

Early Political Foundations
Don Stewart began his career in political communications as Regional Director and Georgia Press Secretary for Senator Paul Coverdell (R-GA) and Press Secretary for Senator Phil Gramm (R-TX). He later became Communications Director for Senator John Cornyn (R-TX), solidifying his reputation as a skilled communicator in the U.S. Senate.
